They Can Say They're "Award-Winning Facilities!"
Talk is cheap – except when it's fact. Ten Academy members recently gained the bragging rights to call themselves "Award-Winning Facilities," and that’s no easy task.
Explained Academy Executive Director Victoria Gresh, “When the statewide average for deficiencies is seven and the national average is eight, and a facility has three or fewer deficiencies, that’s a true accomplishment. That’s better than average – that’s award-winning!”
Gresh visited ten facilities in the past six months to present the awards, noting that this part of her job never gets old. “If I could visit our member facilities every day to present these awards, I would do it in a heartbeat. Touring the facilities, meeting the staff and visiting the residents are what I look forward to. It’s the reason I’m proud to say I work in long-term care.”
The Ohio Academy of Nursing Homes, Inc. presents three types of awards to member facilities:
Perfect Survey Award:
Perfect Life Safety Survey Award:
Award of Excellence:
Touting the fact that several facilities have recently received awards for both Perfect Survey and Perfect Life Safety Survey, Gresh enthused that a true fourth category may need to be added. “Out of necessity, I made up my own ‘Double Perfect Survey Award’ category for the facilities that received zero deficiencies in both surveys, but I really think this should be an additional category. Do I have the authority to do that? I think so, so consider it done!”

The Award: Perfect Life Safety Survey Award and Award of Excellence, one deficiency
Administrator Sue Creamer: “The staff members at St. Catherine’s Care Center pride themselves on being ‘Committed to Caring’ and making their residents’ comfort, care and quality of life a top priority. This award means so much to them, because it is nearly impossible to give them enough recognition and thanks for the outstanding jobs they do day after day, and not just when the surveyors walk through the door. This has also been reflected in the recent survey results from the Ohio Department of Aging in which St. Catherine’s received the highest resident satisfaction score in Fayette County.”
